. On Saturday, September 07, 2002, Gabreal Franklin led a small expedition into the
back country of Big Sur, equiped with 2 glass moving trucks.

Over the period of the day, parts of the storage building dedicated to the storage of these windows was opened for the first time since the late 1970's.

Inside, some of these windows were finally brought out into the sunlight after all this time!
What fun!

As dirty, dusty and disgusting as they are after nearly 23 years untouched,
they still photograph fairly well.  Over the next months, they will be cleaned and re photographed, with proper lighting, and without thick layers of original dirt (decades of city smoke and soot) added to the years in Big Sur storage.

The panels are, of course, none the worse for the storage, glass is wonderful in this respect.

Here, now, are those first photos of a small part of the load taken out of Big Sur to the Santa Cruz Franklin Collection.

Enjoy Looking!     --We did enjoy rooting through them !

KEMPE Close Up

Stained Glass Window from 1870's - Artist: KEMPE, many historians believe Kempe was one of the
most artistic, accomplished and technically proficent artisans of the era.  We agree.
Photo by G. Franklin 2002     -Example Shot, CLICK on Photo for larger version
Stained Glass from this artist is very rare, and these are two remarkable examples of his best work.

The 'Lazarus' panel, may be incorrectly named. The panel is from the middle of England, and is a remarkable piece.
The lower figure chest is damaged, but is an easy repair, which will be done in the next months.

The "Unknown Angel" is a most unusual piece, likely from the early 1800's, and has a beautiful field of old style and type glass.

Here is a full shot, without backlighting (Sorry, these are ALL poor shots!) and another close-up.  Does not do window justice.

HEATON,  BUTLER AND BAYNE

The firm of Heaton, Butler and Bayne were in many ways, as accomplished at the art of Stained Glass as William Morris and Company.

This window serves as a perfect example of their religious work, which was in the finest churches at all parts of England.

   56" x 18 "

This Another HB&B piece, in The Franklin Collection, can be seen here CLICK HERE

The A Close Up of this HB&B Piece.

Another view of detail of this work.

Early panel depicting a young woman giving bread to a small group of people, including a child.
Very unusual colors, vibrant and bright, set this window aside from most other work of its period.
Wonderful painting of faces and plants, combined with the rich colors combine to make a great effect.

The Close Up of same panel.
This Panel, entitled "VESPER" is from the mid 1800's England, and is a small, and wonderful piece.

     24.5 " x 29 "

There are a large number of 'PUB WINDOWS" in the collection, a small few are shown here, again, before proper cleaning.

This door  - in perfect condition, was an entrance to a "Ladies Only" part of a Public Bar.  Highest quality Acid Etched and Brilliant Cut glass.
  . . . .

Two close ups of this amazing type of work.

" THE LION DOOR "
This panel, still in the original door, was the most highly priced Pub door in England in the mid '70's.  When originally purchased for the Collection, several major dealers in the UK tried to stop it from being exported to the USA.

The Lion Door - in Close up detail.
Please note: These poor pictures make it hard to see, but the lion is reverse oil painted on this extraordinary piece of Acid Etched and Brilliant Cut glass, and then mirrored with Mercury Silvering.

An additional 40 or 50 pieces were brought at the same time, but these photos represent the majority of the 'Painted" Stained Glass.

When It represents only a fraction of the PUB Glass, awaiting photography soon.
