he rose above all this
on his Karmic ride
from Liverpool and around the world-
a ride that very few humans ever experience.
I remember sitting in a room with a group of people in Laurel Canyon
when one of the girls realized she had been talking for the last 10 minutes
with George Harrison of the Beatles. He had so much hair and beard
at this time he looked more like a future ZZ Top poster boy than the band
member from the 'Fabulous 4". She starts screaming "It's George!
It's George" and hopping around like she was skipping rope.
She had been almost rudely ignoring him a few short minutes earlier,
but now he was the center of her universe. A claim to fame for years
to come.
George said little as he quietly slipped away, but it was very clear
he had been enjoying himself far more before the fuss. "Fame can
be such a bore" he quietly said, just out of earshot of the girl.
She couldn't have heard anyway. I think she was still yelling.
He had good reason to be comfortable with himself, and somewhat uncomfortable
with fame.
The next years brought many projects to George's attention, some great,
some interesting. Probably all interesting from George's point of
view.
After producing the Monty Python's great "Life of Brian", George had
some downturns, ultimately ending November 29, 2001.
George never got over John's death. Never.
But many of us have not - never will either.
In 1997 he was diagnosed with cancer.
Who am I, Why am I here, Where am I going?
In 1998, an asshole broke into his home in Hendley-on-Thames, and stabbed
him repeatedly. Piercing his lung and peace of mind.
The next year he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Then the courts did not properly prosecute the intruder sicko, a disappointment.
Then a brain Tumor. Treatments. Easing of the pain.
Conscious of God, Fearless of Death, he passed away with loved ones.
He is survived by a wonderful wife, Olivia and his son.
The legacy he has left behind will live forever.
We will miss you forever.
